Career timeline for law students

Our two-year training contracts attract applications from the highest calibre law and non-law graduates. We have two intakes each year and recruit those with the imagination, commitment and commercial acumen to excel. A large proportion of our graduate intake will be familiar to us from our summer vacation schemes and open events which form a key part of our graduate recruitment programme.

The following timeline applies if you are a law student and starts from your penultimate year of study:

Before your training contract

September 2012 – November 2012

At this stage, it is important to define what you are looking for in a law firm. We would advise you to research firms thoroughly and to attend law fairs and other careers events. This well help you get a feel for what is right for you and learn more about the specifics of the summer vacation schemes and training contracts on offer. Please also see our application process for important information.

December 2012 – January 2013

You should apply for summer vacation schemes during this time. The deadline for our scheme is 31 January 2013.

Summer 2013

We would strongly advise that you take part in our summer vacation scheme, if possible. This will give you an invaluable insight into how we work. You should start applying for training contracts as early in the summer as possible. Our application deadline is 31 July 2012.

August 2014 or February 2015

Start your Legal Practice Course (LPC).

During your training contract

March or September 2015

Start your training contract.

Induction

Before you begin your first seat in a particular practice area, you will benefit from a two-week induction programme. This will teach you critical research skills, including how to use the variety of resources and facilities available to you. After two months’ experience in your first seat, you will be well placed to discuss your next three seats with us.

Remaining three seats

Our seat system offers the widest possible exposure to different practice areas and international offices. This will enable you to make the best and most informed choice of qualification area. During your remaining seats, you will experience an international and/or client secondment, and spend time in a range of practice areas.

After your training contract

2 years

Training is complete and you have qualified as a solicitor. You will continue to improve your knowledge, skills and experience. Our training scheme and our lawyer development programme take you from associate to senior associate, and support your career plans towards senior roles of counsel or partner.
